The National Center for Cancer Care and Research (NCCCR) is an academic medical institution and the only cancer hospital in the State of Qatar. It is part of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and looks after cancer patients who require ongoing treatments such as chemotherapy, targeted, hormone immunotherapy and radiotherapy. NCCCR also treats benign and malignant hematology disorders in addition to palliative care and pain management, and high risk cancer genetic services. NCCCR is focused on delivering high quality and safe patient care and at the same time adopting cutting edge technology and the latest methodologies of providing world class cancer therapies.
Education and research programs are a strong focus for all staff at NCCCR and efforts in these areas are translated into improvements in patient care. NCCCR been accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI) since 2011.
The National Cancer Strategy for Qatar, which was launched in 2011, stipulates a number of recommendations for improving the cancer journey for patients.
The Oncology Fellowship Program is designed to educate physicians and our program goal is to support each fellow in their individual research and education through excellent mentorship, and outstanding scholarly opportunities.

- Its aims to graduate competent specialists in Medical Oncology capable of assuming a consultant role in the subspecialty.
- The fellow must acquire a working knowledge of the theoretical basis of the subspecialty, including its foundations in basic medical science and research.
- Fellows should demonstrate the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitude for effective patient-centered care and service to a diverse population.
- Accompanied with a high degree of clinical competence in the investigation and management of patients with a spectrum of hematological and neoplastic disease.
- Must know, acute and long-term complications of cancer and its treatment, and supportive and palliative care.
- The fellow must develop the ability to function as a consultant in an inpatient, ambulatory setting and as a part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Expertise in communications, relevant investigative methods and technical skills are essential, together with skilla in the collection and interpretation of data and decision-making.
- In all aspects of specialist practice, the graduate must be able to address issues of gender, age, culture, ethnicity and ethics in a professional manner.
Our fellowship is a three year program and fellows have the opportunity to rotate
- Inpatient services designed and maintained to manage multiple oncological, hematological problems.
- Outpatients as fellows can see a wide spectrum of solids tumors based in subspecialty oriented services.
- Attend a wide range of multi-disciplinary tumors boards.
- Other mandatory rotations include a month of palliative oncology and one month of radiation therapy. A two month hematology rotation and other electives are at the discretion of the fellow and director and may be used as either further clinical time or further research time.
- Teaching activities, informally as well as through the specific conference schedules. These conferences include: daily morning reports, science seminars, board reviews, Journal Club, research conferences, Tumor Board, tumor conferences, and core resident lectures. In addition, fellows are encouraged to attend the general internal medicine conferences, Grand Rounds, M & M, and Journal Clubs.
- Scholarly activity is required as part of the training program. All fellows are asked to identify a research project within the first three months of their fellowship and are given time to complete these projects during the standard three -year program.
Expectations of the Faculty in Regard to Fellows
The faculty is committed to basic science, clinical research, teaching, and superior medical care. Fellows are expected to participate actively in one or more of the research programs in either the laboratory or the clinic.
